Growing up in Ankeny, Iowa, Julie Moss now resides just outside of Elkhart on an acreage with her husband of 25 years. They have two grown boys; the elder is a 2010 Iowa State graduate and is working locally, while the younger is attending college at MIT in Cambridge, MA.

Julie grew up listening to her folks playing country music on their record player and was singing along by age 2. When she was 10 years old, Moss began singing in a band that performed in Ankeny and surrounding towns. She performed with several other groups up through high school.

Julie started playing the guitar in 1997, learning from family friend Ellie Webb. She’s been singing and playing primarily for seniors since then, but folks of all ages enjoy her sound. Moss has become a regular at retirement centers in the afternoons while working at her job of 20+ years as the administrative assistant for the Iowa Association of County Conservation Boards in the mornings. For many audience members, her music ministry of singing old-time gospel songs brings up cherished memories of church and home.

In 2004, she was encouraged to try her hand at the Iowa State Fair yodeling contest. In her yodeling debut, she finished in a 3-way tie for 1st place, and ended up 2nd overall. Julie has since added it to her repertoire in addition to old-time gospel and country. She finds that folks love to sing with her and she encourages audience participation; she’ll gladly give you a quick rundown on how to yodel along.

Moss also became a member of the Merrymakers Association in 2008, was crowned the Newton Idol winner in 2009, and won the Little Brown Church in the Vale talent show contest back-to-back in 2008 and 2009. In September 2009, Julie was the opening act for country superstar Billy Currington at the Iowa Speedway. She released her second solo album "Just a Closer Walk" in December 2009, which has 12 old-time gospel songs, including one with yodeling. She hopes to record more in the future.

Julie says, “I used to say I was a secretary and moonlighted as a musician, now I am a musician and moonlight as a secretary.” She hopes her singing will inspire you as it has countless others.
